I recently spoke at a wellness event and heard one of the presenters, Tami Hymas, say something that caught me off-guard. See what you think when you hear what she said, “I deserve to wake up early.” What?! Did I really hear that right? I deserve to wake up early?!
What was your initial reaction to reading that statement?
Don’t we usually think, “I deserve to sleep in?” “I deserve that extra cookie or that bowl of ice cream?” “I deserve that new pair of jeans (even though I have 3 others in my closet that fit but I never wear)?”
Could it be that we mistakenly think that something, anything with an immediate gratification is the reward?
Yet, what does thinking this way bring us? A rushed and frantic morning? An uncomfortable, “blah” feeling and extra pounds from eating too many sweets? A stressed life of worry about finances and what to do with all of our stuff? Is that really the life we want? Who deserves that?
Isn’t, “I deserve to wake up early” really another way of saying, “I deserve to be the best person I can be?” “I deserve to be my best self for my family, my employer, my employees, my neighbors, for me?”
Think about where this line of thinking takes you? It leads you to a life of self-mastery, to progress, to fulfillment, to success. So, ask yourself, “What do I really deserve, those few extra minutes of sleep or a life headed toward fulfillment and joy because I am becoming the person I am meant to be?”
It’s a rare understanding to recognize and practice those behaviors that will ultimately lead to being your best self!
So, yes, I do deserve to wake up early!
I’d love to hear your thoughts. What do you deserve?
Love,

I LOVE this post! I have been thinking the same thing lately….why do I “reward” myself with things that don’t ultimately lead to my happiness! I am beginning to think in terms of giving my future self a gift, a real gift, a good gift. Thanks for sharing this thought so clearly. I love it!

Thanks so much, Yvonne! I know! It’s such a different way of looking at things and one that I’m continually reminding myself of. 🙂
