If you could take only a few things on an extended trip, what would you bring?
I pondered this question as I watched my daughter weigh her suitcase before flying out the next morning.
She was leaving for a 9-month job at a remote off-grid lodge in Northern Alaska.
She would have limited space in her living quarters and weight restrictions while traveling.
Aside from the necessary cold-weather clothes, she had a pile of books.
I wondered what books would be important enough to take up such valuable, limited space?
With her permission I share her list.
- Her scriptures
- “Man’s Search for Meaning,” by Victor Frankl
- “Israel, A Concise History of a Nation Reborn.”
- “The Power of Now,” by Eckart Tolle
- A book on Chakras
- An Advanced Russian Reader
- Her Russian “Book of Mormon.”
- A camera book on understanding exposure.
I was given a glimpse into her character, and what was important to her.
God’s word
History
Self-development
Language
New skills
I wondered what books would be important enough for me to bring in such a situation?
What books would be important enough for you?
What we choose to carry with us at the expense of other things can give us insights into what we value.
I invite you to explore your discoveries as you ponder your response.
Much love,
