Do you ever second-guess you way out of an experience?
Let me explain what I mean.
I teach Sunday school in my local church congregation.
I love the opportunity to study God’s word, interact with my neighbors of faith, and learn from their perspectives, and experiences.
The challenge for me is that the moment I finish the class, I am beset by second-guessing, and questioning my efforts.
I think of the things I should have said, or not said.
I think of how I forgot an important point.
Self-doubts creep in and start changing my experience.
Instead of accepting, and enjoying the shared mutual growth, I allow my insecurities to diminish what had been an uplifting experience.
In other words…
I’ve second-guessed my way out of a positive experience.
Have you ever done the same?
Perhaps you doubted yourself after a conversation with a friend, or stranger.
Maybe you questioned your efforts following a family dinner, or vacation.
Though I’m still working on overcoming this tendency, the following three-step process has helped.
1. Recognize what’s happening, and say Stop!
2. Change the thought. Immediately!
3. Find something good to focus on until the temptation to self-malign passes.
It will pass, as soon as you stop feeding the negative thought.
“Doubts are fear-fueled stories you create about who you are, what you’re worth, and what you’re capable of achieving…Your doubts are not the truth.” Dr. Margie Warrell
Let’s not allow perceived failings to diminish all the good that we do, and are.
Decide today to no longer second-guess yourself out of a positive experience.
Much love,
