Some nights I sleep well. Other nights, not so much.
Those restless nights often happen with worrisome thoughts and what ifs.
Recently, after trying to prevent my racing mind from interfering with a good night’s rest, I was given a thought that allowed me to quickly fall back to sleep.
It was nothing profound, or new, but came to my mind unbidden, and allowed me to relax my mind enough to sleep.
The thought was this:
One day at a time.
Because it came in such a clear, calming way, I roused myself enough to write it down before drifting off to sleep.
I did not want to forget the message.
The next morning, as I read what I had written, I was reminded of a quote my mother had told me many years before.
“It is when tomorrow’s burden is added to the burden of today that the weight is more than a man can bear.” George Macdonald
How many times, in my desire to know the end from the beginning, and every step in-between, do I weigh myself down with the unknown?
I tell myself, if only I could have everything planned out in advance, I’d feel so much better.
But the truth is, trying to prepare for every eventuality is not possible, and actually interferes with our ability to be at peace and from receiving inspiration in the moment.
We would do well to remember that:
-We can do only one thing at a time.
-We can be in only one place at a time.
-We can live in only one moment at a time.
And that is enough.
With love,
