This may sound silly to you, but this last week, the simple act of replacing last year’s calendar with a new one became a meaningful moment for me, though not in the way you might expect.
For years, I had settled for the freebie calendars given out from hardware stores or financial institutions. Now, there is nothing wrong with those and I was grateful for not having to spend the money to purchase a calendar every year. But this past year something changed.
I had created a beautiful office space with periwinkle walls, white furniture, silver accents, even a white, fluffy carpet! I love this uplifting, light-filled room!
I had put a lot of thought into every item placed in this room and as I went to hang up a non-descript calendar that was just lying around the house, I felt my energy and the vibration of the room change.
I could have settled and accepted it, saying it was no big deal, but that wasn’t true.
So, I splurged on a calendar that matched my room. Something seemingly so insignificant as a calendar ended up becoming a source of beauty and inspiration. It uplifted and actually strengthened my spirit on a daily basis. Who knew that something so minor could be so supportive of my emotional needs?!
Beauty is a necessary part of our lives for it feeds our soul and strengthens our spirit, but all too often it is placed last on our list of important things.
John Muir said, “Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.” John Muir
Are you denying yourself the small beauties that can actually bring you great joy? How many, little things are you allowing into your life that, though serviceable, provide you minimal if any satisfaction, much less beauty and joy?
What would happen if you started with just one of those items and replaced it with something not only useful, but beautiful? There is no reason an item cannot be both.
You might be surprised at the change in your emotions, experience and outlook on life as you place beauty on your list of necessities.
Your spiritual and emotional needs are supported by finding, discovering and creating beauty in your day to day life.
It can be as simple as:
- Splurging on a handful of flowers. Place half in the kitchen and the other half in a vase on your bathroom counter so you can enjoy it every morning and night. (Plus, the mirror doubles the effect.)
- Changing out the pillows on your couch to new, vibrant colors.
- Replacing old, worn out shoes with a fun, new pair.
- Getting rid of a wilted, dying plant and replacing it with one that is alive and vibrant.
- Updating your lip color.
- Hanging a strand of white lights around your bedroom walls.
There are countless ways of adding beauty to your life in small but meaningful ways.
Something as simple as buying a beautiful calendar did it for me.
Have fun creating the beauty your soul desires and then begin to notice the changes in your daily life experiences.
I’d love to hear what you’ve done to add beauty to your daily life. Share in the comments below.
