Today is a big day! I am hosting many of my family members who are gathering at my house to view the solar eclipse! Our home is directly in the middle of the path through the United States, where we will experience the complete solar eclipse for the full 2 mins 40.1 seconds!
How awesome is that?!
While preparing for this event, I read about a business owner in another part of the country planning to shoot fireworks during the eclipse. His intent, he wrote, “is to enhance” the solar eclipse experience.
Really?! An incredibly rare event of the sun being completely blocked by the moon, and everything unique that goes along with it – Bailey’s Beads, the shadow snakes, the Diamond Ring, the corona, etc. – and you want to shoot off fireworks and miss those singular events?!
Would you want to trade a once in a lifetime experience (the solar eclipse) for something you can see at least once a year, if not more often (fireworks)?
Now, don’t get me wrong. I love fireworks! They’re exciting, but I wouldn’t dream of trading a once in a life-time solar eclipse event for something I can see each year.
This got me thinking though, of how many times I may have traded something of significance for something of lesser value.
For example:
- Reading positive and uplifting quotes on Facebook may be good, but perhaps not as good as putting the phone down and connecting and enjoying the company of my husband.
- A family movie night can be fun, but not if it is always taking the place of playing games with or sitting and visiting with each other.
Are there times in your life when you are trading something meaningful for something of lesser importance?
As you view the eclipse today or the next time you have a choice to make on how to spend your time, remember to ask yourself if you are spending your time on those things that matter most.
Have a wonderful day!
