I like my family.
We are each so different, yet we really like each other!
Over the recent Thanksgiving holiday, my family gathered to celebrate what would have been my mother’s 94th birthday.
This family reunion consisted of three days of eating, talking, playing games, and strengthening connections with one another.
I was reminded how much I enjoy my family, my siblings, their spouses, their children, on down to the next generation.
With over 30 people in attendance, there was a variety of interests, opinions, and professions.
From farming, to scientific work, business, film-making, artists, fire-fighters, retirees, and students.
The list of varied interests goes on and on.
Some married, some single. Some like to travel, others prefer staying closer to home.
With all these differences one might think we’d have a hard time getting along.
But instead of tension we felt at ease.
The differences were flavoring to the wonderful mix of family.
How is it possible that so many different people can get along?
1. Desire to stay connected
We are family, and want to stay close.
2. The ability to see each other’s differences as good.
Accepting that differences add interest, and perspective.
3. Commonality of life’s experiences.
Not that the experiences are common, but that we all experience times of of success, or hardship, heartache, and joy. We can relate to the shared emotions.
It’s not easy. It requires effort, and sacrifice.
Is it worth the work to strengthen relationships with family?
I believe it is.
Much love,
