In a world of differing opinions, how can we know what are the best choices for our health?
For every touted benefit of certain foods, there are articles citing their uselessness or danger.
How does one navigate it all?
I don’t have a cure-all answer, but I do have a powerful suggestion and an effective tool.
Suggestion:
Ask your body.
That may sound crazy, but have you ever tuned in to what your body is saying to you? What it is trying to tell you?
Your body talks to you all the time.
Are you listening?
For example.
How many times have you experienced the following?
-getting a headache after eating a piece of chocolate cake or bowl of ice cream?
You actually knew you would, but disregarded the warning.
-no longer really tasting or enjoying the Cheetos or chips you’re eating?
But you kept going and emptied the bag.
-bloating or feeling yucky after certain heavy meals?
You knew what to expect, but for various reasons continued and felt miserable afterwards.
Your body was communicating with you, before with the thought, and after with the physical discomfort.
And in that communication lies the key to discovering what is best for one’s health.
The body also tells us good things, like feeling energized and enlivened after exercise or walking in nature.
Ask the body and it will tell us what is working and what is not.
So, how do we ask?
The Tool:
We ask through the process of free-writing. Free-writing is a form of brainstorming. Writing ideas and thoughts down without stopping to review, correct or even think about what is being written. You are just allowing the words to flow, giving the subconscious mind permission to speak.
-Plan for uninterrupted time.
Maybe early in the morning or those mid-night hours when you’re not able to sleep.
-Pull out a designated notebook and pen and start talking to your body.
Write your thoughts, your feelings, your desires, your questions.
-Don’t re-read yet or edit.
-Just let the words flow and then listen to your body’s response.
-Listen to the answers that come to your mind through thoughts and feelings.
-Write them down.
The purpose is to open up your ability to communicate with your body.
You may feel awkward at first.
It requires practice and trust that you are entitled and capable of receiving answers. Believe that your body knows what it needs and will communicate what is in your best health.
Are you listening? Your body wants to talk you.
