I tried to embrace a minimalist lifestyle, but I quickly realized that certain things, though not essential, truly bring me joy.
This became especially clear when I considered throwing away a box of thank-you notes and letters.
The Notes
Most of these notes were handwritten—some on cards, others on simple stationery or plain paper.
Some were from friends of my grown children, thanking us not just for a wedding gift or high school graduation money, but for being a positive example, and for making them feel welcome in our home as they were growing up.
Other notes were from dear friends, expressing their appreciation for our friendship.
Some came in response to a service I had given.
Notes from friends who have since passed away were especially meaningful.
There were also notes from my children at various ages. Some were carefully penned with the encouragement of teachers, showcasing their childhood handwriting.
Others were simple scrawled hearts and stick figures that made me smile, filled with sincere words of love.
I saved these notes because they conveyed more than a quick, polite “thank you.”
Each sender had taken the time to thoughtfully express their gratitude.
These messages were deeply personal, coming from the heart.
This stack of notes wasn’t clutter; it was a collection of love given and received.
The Joy of Reading Anew
As I read through them, I found myself smiling and feeling a lightness in my heart. I felt the gift of their love all over again, lifting me just as it did when I first received these messages.
What a precious gift I’d been given—not just once or twice, but as often as I choose to read them!
The Invitation
During this busy season, if you’re looking for a moment of peace and renewal, pull out your own collection of thank-you notes (if you’ve kept them, like I have) and soak in the warmth of reliving these moments of love and gratitude.
And if you haven’t saved such notes, take a moment to reflect on the blessings that surround you today.
Receive and share that powerful gift of love!

I love this. I truly thank you for your friendship and the times that (even though in the dentist office) I got to visit and got to know you. I truly admire you and how you are following your heart and making a difference in the lives of others. It is a gift when we get to be an instrument in the hands of our Savior to help others find their best self. An act of service to Him and his children, You are just one of the blessings I will count this season.
With love,
Suzie
