As I look around at the challenges our nation faces today, I am reminded of Benjamin Franklin’s words:
“Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.”
This is a frightening statement that might, at first glance, cause one to lose hope.
I am just one person, and I sometimes wonder, what can I do to change the direction our nation seems to be headed?
Thomas Jefferson said,
“We in America do not have government by the majority—we have government by the majority who participate….All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.”
And so…
- We vote.
- We speak out against miscarriages of justice.
- We raise righteous, God-fearing families.
- We teach our families to understand and appreciate the Constitution for what it is—an inspired, powerful document of truths!
- We honor God.
- We repent.
We remember that:
“Freedom is not a gift bestowed upon us by other men, but a right that belongs to us by the laws of God and Nature.” —Benjamin Franklin
This July 4th, let us express gratitude for our freedoms, for those inspired men and women who paved the way, and consider the ways in which we can live worthy of their sacrifices.
