Sometimes the thought, if a little is good then a lot is better, leads me astray.
This line of thinking can be especially challenging for me when it comes to creating schedules or setting goals.
I have a tendency to get overly detailed and overwhelmed in my routines.
But over the years I have discovered that different types of schedules work for me at different times of my life.
Blocking my time in 15 or 30 minute intervals worked well when I had the activities of six growing children in my home.
Later, as they left home, I found a more flexible routine was more supportive of my goals.
But no matter the specifics of my routine I find that keeping in mind these following four categories helps me stay on track.
*Faith-strengthening
*Physical
*Productive
*Fun
Having a more flexible schedule allows me to tap into my natural rhythm which then helps me be more productive.
My faith-strengthening activities usually take place in the morning. I pray, study scriptures, journal, etc. in the quiet of the morning. But if it doesn’t happen for some reason, I can adjust and feel good about doing it any time.
Maybe my flow of energy is off one day and my usual exercise doesn’t feel good. I can do something else instead and feel satisfied that I’m getting something done in the physical category, even though it’s not my usual.
Since I have a tendency to hyper focus on my schedule I can often feel irritable and unfulfilled by the end of the day. Making sure I have something fun to look forward to increases my ability to be productive.
Without a schedule it is easy to let things slide and to feel sluggish. So, having some type of routine is necessary.
Perhaps you need to simplify your routine, or you might need to create something more detailed.
There are many ways to adapt this strategy of categories, but don’t overthink it.
Find what supports you in your goals and enjoy the journey!
Much love,
